In April, the colour teal is not just a colour, it’s the colour associated with Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Recent events in the news, both in Australia and around the world, have shone a light on sexual assault, and the reality of day-to-day living for people trying to cope with being assaulted. The current Australian statistics regarding sexual assault are both frightening and concerning, with almost 2 million Australian adults, including 1 in 6 women, and 1 in 25 men, having experienced at least one sexual assault since the age of 15. And the rate of police-recorded sexual assaults on children under 15 years is nearly twice that figure.
Sexual assault can have major effects on those who experience it, and the fallout can last for years. One of the most important things that can help those who have survived a sexual assault is support. Whether that is a safe place to stay, encouragement and support if they choose to report it to the authorities, or simply an ear to listen without judgement. Support and assistance are key in ensuring that the survivor feels safe and able to move forward.
Self-care is also important, taking time to take care for yourself and make sure that you’re ok. Simple things like eating and drinking properly, sleeping, exercising and relaxing can often fall by the wayside when someone has experienced immense stress or trauma. Keeping a healthy physical self means that you have more energy to devote to being healthy, emotionally and psychologically as well.
If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted and you feel you would like to speak to someone for assistance or information, there are resources and organisations that can help, so please don’t be afraid to reach out.
